I have friends, well a very few friends, who do not like college football. Obviously, they are not originally from the South. They just don’t understand football obsession. I actually feel sorry for them. I am sure if I read up on this a little more, there are plenty of studies by sociologists who can attribute this game worship to some kind of tribal affinity and sense of belonging-ness that we just don’t get in our disconnected technological modern existence.
Come on, we don’t actually worship our mascots. I do, however, love UGA ( ugga). He has an air conditioned dog house, a personal assistant and an officially NCAA sanctioned groomer. I like wearing red and black and it gives me a sense of pride when “my” team beats “your” team, almost as if I had won some sort of contest myself.
So here’s to tailgating, those guys that paint their bodies in team colors and wear crazy wigs, ESPN Game Day, homecoming, team mascots and all the beautiful pageantry that surrounds college football.
In honor of my favorite football rivalry…….
Georgia vs. Florida
